Ikat, a type of fabric traditionally produced throughout Central and Southeast Asia, has gained in popularity over the last several years. With its graphic patterns (which are achieved through resist dying and weaving) and bold color pallets, ikat can make a great choice for small upholstery projects like occasional chairs.

Now available at almost every price-point, ikats are accessible to everyone. Less expensive options will be screen-printed on a solid ground fabric, while true examples will be woven in small panels that have been stitched together. When thinking about how to use ikat in your project, keep in mind that a petite chair can act as a beautiful frame for a small amount of fabric. You could also consider adding some ikat pillows to a piece of upholstered furniture in a solid color. If you are planning on using the real deal, know that it can be somewhat fragile and should have a knit back applied for dimensional stability. An interior designer or upholsterer will be able help you with this.
