The Butterfly Chair
With the world focused on all things British today (what did you think of the dress?) we thought we’d turn our attention to one of our favorite English furniture manufacturers. Ercol was founded in 1920 by Lucian Ercolani in High Wycombe, the chairmaking capital of England. With steam-bent wood featuring heavily in his designs, Ercolani’s mid-century pieces have recently enjoyed a renaissance, and have been put back into production.
Available in multiple finishes, the “Originals” (as they’re marketed), comprise several lightweight, lasting chair and table designs. Also available is an updated range called “Chiltern” for John Lewis based on the mid-century pieces’ proportions.

Originals in a new matte black finish

One of our favorite introductions at the 2011 Milan Fair was a range of beautiful windsor chairs by Matthew Hilton. Produced by Ercol and sold by de la Espada, we especially love them in the American black walnut shown here.
