1stdibs, one of our favorite resources for inspiration and the best place to find high-quality antiques online, has just started a brilliant new feature called Through the Lens. Showcasing interviews with some of today’s most talented and in-demand architectural and lifestyle photographers, the series is a rare glimpse at the people who create the stunning images shown in the best design magazines. It’s wonderful to see the focus squarely on the people who make the pictures rather than the subjects of the pictures alone; as avid photographers we’re thrilled to have the spotlight shifted to the people who make our favorite designers’ work shine.

Architectural photography is a difficult endeavor, both technically and aesthetically. And yet, the work shown in these interviews (much of which you’ll recognize if you read shelter titles with the same voracity as us!) appears effortless. Regardless of your personal style, there is something in each of these images to admire- framing, use of light, even the overall mood. Each photographer enhances something that is already present in each space but incredibly hard to capture. It’s a skill we’re in awe of, and working hard to hone!

The next time you pick up a design magazine on the newsstand, be sure to pay attention to the photography credits. Chances are you’ll recognize one of the names featured at Through the Lens.
