Noe Valley Living Room, North Elevation
Twice in the last month, we’ve dealt with a situation not uncommon to those living in dwellings with tight stairwells: the dreaded getting-the-sofa-through-the-door moment. In older homes and urban homes especially, this is frequently an issue as upholstery is being selected and specified. Many pieces are simply too long or too wide to make it up winding stairs and around tight corners.

If you’ve measured carefully and know something won’t fit up the stairs, take stock of your other options. In both cases we were dealing with, although we couldn’t get full-sized upholstery up the stairs, we specified sofas narrow enough to pass through street-facing windows. It can be nerve-racking to watch your new sofa as it’s hoisted two stories above the streets of San Francisco (pictured here from the inside), but we’re happy to report that everyone -including our fantastic client- survived.
