While researching mantels and surrounds for a fireplace we’re currently designing, we ran across the work of Vancouver, BC-based Solus Decor. Solus designs and manufactures cast concrete fireplaces, tiles, and fire pits. The material qualities of cast concrete make it an appealing option for a fireplace- it has inherent weight and warmth, a beautiful hand, can be easily colored, and is long-lasting.
One of our newest projects is an early 1900s California craftsman home with a huge amount of architectural millwork that has been painted white. Even though we love natural wood, this millwork isn’t original, so we’ve decided to leave it painted. Instead, we’ll introduce contrast with dark wallpapers and paints.
