We're smitten with a new way to organize the mountains of product and interiors tear sheets that were threatening to bury our desks and overtake our walls!

Happy New Year (almost a month late!!!). We only have a second to stop in and say hello, but we wanted to make sure that you knew about Pinterest- which we’re sure you do, since you’re definitely more tech savvy than us. We’re pretty smitten with it in the office as a way to organize tear sheets and inspirational project imagery.

If you’re unfamiliar with Pinterest, it’s an online service you can use to save images from sites you visit- think of it as a huge virtual bulletin board. Once you’ve installed a widget into your browser, you’re all set to save things to boards you categorize yourself. You can also browse other people’s pins and re-save them to your personal boards.

Looking for inspiration for a kitchen remodel? An edited selection of bathroom faucets? The perfect foyer lantern? Find someone on Pinterest who’s taste and expertise you trust, and you’re a few scrolls away from finding something great.

Let us know if you’re on Pinterest already and how you’re utilizing it. And if you’d like to follow our boards, you can find us pinning (almost daily!) right here.

One of our current favorite projects is a great example of the way small details make a tremendous difference in the quality of a space.

One of our current favorite projects is a great example of the way small details make a tremendous difference in the quality of a space. The owner of this home has great design instincts and personal style, but wasn’t happy with the cumulative effect of her decorating decisions. She called us in for some advice, and rather than start from scratch, we made adjustments to a lot of existing pieces- tailoring here, recovering there, and doing lots and lots of editing. The resulting space is starting to feel right, thanks to a few small changes and some strategic alterations to the paint job (which we will wait to reveal!).

The living room curtains, above, are off-the-shelf panels, but they’re a nice, heavy linen and they’re lined. Rather than specify new custom curtains, we had the existing panels customized with a casual, inverted pleat header, and replaced the hardware. We also added a medium-brown woven shade under the panels. The added contrast, texture, and tailoring elevate the quality of the overall installation.

In the foyer, we switched out the retro chandelier for a classic Moravian star. This small gesture changes the foyer from funky to glamourous (we’re adding the funk back in elsewhere). The contrasting black also mimics all of the architectural black paint we’re adding to the space- black interior french doors, black mullions, and black millwork details. We especially love the mirrored-star canopy we specified.

Two flights of stairs needed to be recovered, and this modernized Celtic-knot pattern we picked was a complete 180 from the existing carpet. It’s handsome and hides dirt really well- important with pets and kids running up and down constantly.

And finally, the first of many small tweaks to the dining room- we had the Chinese-red Queen Anne chairs reupholstered in the most saturated hot pink velvet we could find. Pink and red will be making several appearances in this project, so these chairs will be important in tying everything together.

We have a lot of other small (and a few big) changes happening at this house over the next few weeks. We’ll be sure to share when we’re finished!

We’re just beginning the gut renovation of two bathrooms in a San Francisco residence, and we’re using the opportunity to visit a few of our favorite tile and stone showrooms and see what’s new in the marketplace. One product we’re eager to see in person is the new Visage glass tile from Ann Sacks.

Created by hand using an age old silvering technique, the tiles recall the silvery depths of antique mirrors. We like that each tile is unique, reflecting its handmade nature. It’s also a material that can be used in both traditional and contemporary settings- definitely the mark of something timeless.

Available in a standard 4 x 8 field format, Visage can also be special ordered in alternate sizes. We think it could be pretty amazing in a powder room or in a dramatic kitchen- how about you?

This line is the perfect addition to any contemporary interior. Although the lines are relatively clean and modern, the organic materials and handmade qualities lend a sense of warmth and softness that is all too often lacking in contemporary design.

Yesterday in the Santa Fe office, we were introduced to an interior lighting and accessories company called Hive (not to be confused with Hive Modern). Hive is a collaborative of designers under the creative direction of Kenneth Cobonpue – a furniture designer whose work we greatly admire. Located in Cebu (a province in the Philippines), Hive’s designers find inspiration for form and materials from nature and strive to use as many locally sourced, self-sustaining organic materials as possible. Hive also values handmade production techniques and tries to implement these hand-working methods whenever possible.

In the office yesterday, we were fortunate enough to see and feel samples of all of the materials that are used in the production of Hive’s lighting and accessories – the pictures do not do the materials justice – they are gorgeous! This line is the perfect addition to any contemporary interior. Although the lines are relatively clean and modern, the organic materials and handmade qualities lend a sense of warmth and softness that is all too often lacking in contemporary design.

It's fun working on projects that lead you in directions you would not have anticipated.

It’s fun working on projects that lead you in directions you would not have anticipated. The sorority house we’re getting ready to install is a perfect example: we never thought we’d do a red and green room full of aggressive pattern and completely traditional furniture silhouettes, but we’re gathering the finishing touches for that exact scenario right now (and we’re excited about how things are looking so far!).

Since the academic year just began, we finally got a chance to go meet the girls who live in the house last week. We showed them a few renderings of what the room is going to look like in about a month, and it was great to see their reactions. It’s nice when initial responses are, “that’s so me!” and “I love that!”

At any rate, things are clipping along quickly on this project and a half dozen others. We’ll check in as frequently as possible over the next few weeks, but we’ve got our heads down at the moment!

p.s. here’s a little peek at one of the components of the room shown above- we just got this chair back from the refinisher & sent it to the upholsterer this afternoon . . .

. . . we’re excited for installation day!

The Miss K lamp by Philippe Stark for Flos, above, is quite good looking in person. This is a style of lamp that is imitated in lower price-points, but when you see the quality of the materials and detailing of the Flos piece, you understand why it’s worth spending a little more. The polycarbonate is heavy and almost looks like glass. The scale and silhouette of this piece are so classic that it would work in just about any space.

The Tolomeo series is a well-established go-to for task lighting, but we’d never seen the wall spot in context. Again, a great looking, functional piece that would be a welcome addition to many rooms.

And finally, this was the first time we were able to sit-test a Nelson Swag Leg Chair. While it’s not the most comfortable seat in the house, it might have one of the most beguiling silhouettes. Definitely a pretty addition to any room in need of something sculptural.

We spent a few days in Boston during the last two weeks; one day last week was spent scouting locations for a photo shoot for a cellist, and this week we went back for a day to do the actual photography. Based on the brief we were given by the cellist, we knew we wanted to try to capture something on Boston’s Beacon Hill- the charming, narrow streets and ivy covered townhouses would lend themselves well to the images she wanted to make.

While we were scouting (that’s our friend Andrea, a make up artist and stylist, above), we couldn’t help but be inspired by the architecture on the hill. Red brick, mullioned windows, glossy black doors, unlacquered brass hardware, cobblestones- it was hard to not be distracted by the gorgeous built environment surrounding us.

If you want to take a little vacation from the city while you’re still in the city, take a stroll through Beacon Hill. And if anyone in Boston has a townhouse in need of a refresh, we’re game!

(And while this has nothing to do with design, we thought it would be fun to share a little peek at one of the images we made during our shoot. We shot an entire portfolio worth of photos for the cellist’s website, and we’ll share them all when they’re finished!)
